Blog Entry on the Monday 16th, April, 2007

I am feeling grumpy today. I applied for promotion in good faith. I was directed to look at the advert - however I did not take anything for granted and spent a lot of time writing the application and preparing for the interview.

.... skip some non-public accessible details.......

I was not offered the job that was advertised. The process in my opinion was not handled well. I was offered a position with a lesser job title then my current role, no details of the projects but an increased salary. I declined this offer.

Maybe, just maybe I am in a bad mood because I was not up to scratch. However all other feedback from internal and external colleagues give extremely good feedback on my competencies.

Heck good points. I still have a interesting and challenging job. I have relatively good job security - 157,000 lights or Traffic Lights at 6,000 locations need maintenance and are not going away. It is fast paced and fun. I get solve more problems in a day - rather than spend years on non-delivering projects. I have built up a very strong team and working partnerships with contractors. We are delivering record levels of Traffic Signal availability.

Dear Readers - always remember that an interview process is bi-directional. If I come across as poor in a interview - then I expect not to be offered a job. If the management of a interview process is poor, then that is going to affect my decision.

Glad I got that off my chest - time to move on.

Twenty-fifth Anniversary of the Sinclair ZX Spectrum.

Blog Entry on the Monday 23rd, April, 2007

Wow 25 years. I have very fond memories of the Spectrum. The first computer I ever used. Dad brought one, (he was an earlier adaptor as well), it was amazing. Fantastic idea by Sir Clive Sinclair, in my opinion the TV-Out was fantastic.

Dad wrote a program, "BINGO6" which turned the spectrum in to a Bingo machine for the local pensioners at the social club.

I have very fond memories of programming on it. The BASIC was wonderful to use and I even in later years did some minor machine code. The jump from 48k of memory to my low spec 512M of RAM is more than a jump.
