Another Day

Blog Entry on the Tuesday 01st, March, 2005

Thanks, g1powermac et al.

Allyson's blood pressure is a little high, so she is in Hospital at the moment so they can monitor her better.

Another long day.

Blog Entry on the Friday 04th, March, 2005

I have not been running a blog for that long, I've only been a Open Source developer for a short time. What do you put in your blog, deep stuff, shit stuff, good stuff, software development work, general rambling ?

OK - I'm stressed, tired and emotional.

We did it first

Following a ./ story about, Puppy Linux Lets You Run From, Save To The Same CD I have popsted a reply - if have have mod points - please.

Morphix has had this feature for over a year called cd-pesistent.

Full code is in the CVS, nice GUI, you can either /home, /home and configs or everything back to the LiveCD. Save Incremental changes or full changes. CD-Persistent allows the use of a CD-r or even a better CD-RW. For further details see the HowTo [sourceforge.net] with screenshots. (Disclaimer - I am the main developer for this module)

I was just discussing this earlier about whether Knoppix could do just that..

Morphix a modular based which basically takes away the hard work of re-mastering a Knoppix CD The base, the part based upon Knoppix contains the kernel, kernel modules, hardware detection, etc. This base is left untouched. You can either a change a mainmod or add lots of minimodules to make different liveCDs

I submitted a note on the Knoppix mailing list [linuxtag.org], in May 2004 offering to add this code/feature to Knoppix, but did not get much feedback.

I feel I was the first to have a liveCD save data back to its own CD - all code GPL'ed, buy hey thats development, he who shouts the loudest.

Happy One Week Birthday to Connor

Blog Entry on the Thursday 17th, March, 2005

I have had a cold over the last couple of days. I therefore, due to a self imposed quarantine, have not been able to see Connor. This has been tough. I also could do with a bit more sleep. In all I have been been a bit grumpy today.

Happy One Week Birthday to Connor.

Blog Entry on the Monday 21st, March, 2005

After doing the housework. I spend most of the day at the hospital.

Allyson's blood pressure is coming down and Connor is feeding lots. The good news is that Connor is now out of the special baby care unit, now with Allyson on the Ward. (Pun intended)

Nice photos :-

After leaving the Hospital, I returned to the car. I had left the lights on (oops). I had to ring the RAC. Typically Allyson is the member of the RAC not me. After grooving and using the lines 'Just visited .... Wife in hospital .... Maternity Unit .....'. The very nice man in the RAC breakdown van gave me a jump-start.

Reduced Wiki Spam

Blog Entry on the Wednesday 23rd, March, 2005

I have a nice simple wiki running in my website. My Mum and Sister-in-law use it.

After getting lots of vile wiki spam. I do not want to stop people using my wiki or explain to wiki users the what spam is and why my wiki has been defaced.

I decided to change the edit to ed1t, both in the text of the page and and the url. This is how spammers get though email filters.

The embedded text is used by spammers to google to find a wiki. The url change stops submit robots defacing the wiki, I am still getting hits by bots with edit in the url, trying to deface the wiki with the same text, from different IP addresses (zombies).

I made this change for over the last week and _not_ had any spam, only real posts. I would suggest changing your standard wiki scripts to make the edit action slightly different from the norm.

Cron Scheduled Recording of Internet Radio Broadcasts

Blog Entry on the Saturday 26th, March, 2005

Got an old Pentium laptop from ebay (less than 50 Euros). To act as an other-not-my-webserver-machine to be always in the computer room.

It does many tasks such as downloading isos overnight etc, useful quick look of my email via lynx in the morning. But the main idea was to use it to download internet radio broadcasts via cron jobs.

I put together some a bash script for mplayer and ffmpeg today. [Still can't get ffmpeg to compile vorbis/ogg - so using mp2]. Anyway the bash script works really well.

record_radio.sh 3600 BBC_RADIO_4 /home/bms/radio/saved/

The config file is used to keep the url upto date

record_radio.sh Available
- list the radio stations names that can be used as a parameter.
- Basically just add RADIO.ram url to the config file then name in calling the script (Neat eh?)

Cute baby photos to be uploaded tomorrow. Once Neil d/loads them from his digital camera. Maybe some video from Allyson camcorder as well.

Anyway time for Bed, feed/nappy time is 0430.
